yMusic remixed: Weekly World Premieres

via Q2 Music

This winter, Q2 Music presents a series of weekly world premiere remixes of chamber ensemble yMusic‘s recent album “Balance Problems.” The album features music of Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Norman, Mark Dancigers, Jeremy Turner, Marcos Balter and Timo Andres.

The remixes are commissioned by New Amsterdam Records – the home of yMusic’s last two albums. Each track streams exclusively on Q2 Music for a period of one week. Read more about the campaign and get access to downloads of all of the tracks at New Amsterdam’s website.

Week 7: Low City

Low City is the brainchild of producer/engineer Abe Seiferth (Yeasayer, Turing Machine) and composer Jeremy Turner who contributed The Bear and The Squirrel to yMusic’s “Balance Problems.” The duo remixes Mark Danciger’s Everness.

“When Abe and I first sat down with Everness, we were immediately drawn to the rhythmic motor that begins a few minutes into the piece and that became the spine of the remix. We then created a few synth instruments from some of the more pastoral passages, and started cooking. I’d just been given a book of J.G. Ballard short stories and was quite taken with a particular one called The Garden of Time. The imagery from that story inspired some lyrics, and I asked Alex [Sopp, of yMusic] if she would sing with me. She has a gorgeous voice and even though the part was written at the bottom of her range, it resulted in this ghost like echo that we fell in love with.”
