From this September, a highly anticipated exhibition is taking place throughout the fall as Chris Doyle’s fantastical ‘Hollow and Swell’ is being displayed in San Francisco. The Catharine Clark Gallery presents the exhibition, which features multi-media pieces and also watercolors by Doyle.

The show features a selection of new animations and watercolors by the artist. The works are a conclusion of Doyle’s response to Hudson River School painter Thomas Cole’s work ‘The Course of Empire (1833 – 1836)’. The exhibition draws its inspiration from the central painting, ‘The Consummation of Empire (1836)’, which depicts the peak of a neo-classical civilization. Cole’s painting depicted an agrarian society’s shift to mechanization during the Industrial Revolution and Doyle’s work reflects the effects of digital technology on our cultural landscape. The highlight of the exhibition is Swell, a 4K digital animation with an original score by Emmy nominated composer Jeremy Turner and performed by Flux Quartet. ‘Hollow and Swell’ also includes The Price of Gold, a three-channel animation displayed on a folding screen. The exhibition coincides with the launch of BOX BLUR 2.0, a series of concerts, film screenings, and conversations.

Chris Doyle is an interdisciplinary artist based out of Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Boston College and Harvard University.
